Basic Profile
Character: Kamina
Age: 17
Canon: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Canon Point: Post Episode 8

Eye color: Red
Hair color: Blue
Height: 5'11~6'
Amulet: this but in red.
Clothing: What clothing— Seriously. Just look at his icon. So he wears no shirt and instead has those bandage wraps around his waist and he wears dark brown pants with red rings on the bottom and big white belt that's not really a belt. And sandals. And impossible-to-stay-on-yet-they-do orange sunglasses. And a red cape. Oh and bandage wraps on his arms. That's it. Unless you want to count the blue tattoos he has, the notable one being the blue flame on his back. That is all he wears. In Emp he might be "persuaded" (ie, beaten by Yoko) to dress more sensibly and MAYBE ACTUALLY WEAR A SHIRT but he is super casual.

Information
Background:
Kamina comes from a small underground village called Jiha (Giha, Geeha, spelling depends on translation), but he dreams of escaping his mundane life and break through to the surface, an idea that is completely forbidden by the elders and other inhabitants. They believe there is nothing up there, that all they had was the rock ceiling above them and the earth below. But he knows there is a world up there. When he was a child, his father had taken him up there and had asked him to journey with him. However, Kamina had been too afraid and stayed behind, and his father left both his son and the village behind him.

He later regrets this decision and over the years tries to break through to the surface. However, each attempt is a failure; until he meets a younger boy named Simon. It would be several years later at the age of 17 that they would have a real shot at escaping. He often pulls in Simon to join him in his endeavors, having already called his little group "Gurren-dan." He sees the younger boy’s drill as "the drill that will pierce the heavens," a saying that he will constantly say and become one of his many catch phrases. However, he doesn't just "use" Simon. Although they're not blood related, he considers the boy like his "soul brother" and no matter happens, Kamina will protect him, taking the full blame in an attempt to leave Simon out of it.

After the failed attempt with the use of a ton of molepigs to make a living tower to break the surface, Kamina argues with the chief, claiming how there is a world outside of the ceiling and they're all being cowards staying underground. As this happens, an earthquake occurs, causing everyone to scramble to take cover. Simon tries to pull Kamina away, but he refuses, saying how he never runs. But Simon starts to freak out, he remembers how Simon lost his parents in a quake years ago and pulls him to him, acting like a protective shield, though it wasn't that bad of a quake to begin with. Kamina is then locked up in their little prison system while Simon is sent back to drilling.

However, Simon later finds this strange thing with a huge face on it and tunnels up to Kamina’s cell. He wants to show it to Kamina and they "break out." Apparently Kamina has some respect for the law as he mentions that so long as they get back to the cell, it should be fine. They’re still caught, but as the chief of the village is about to bring it down on Kamina, a giant monster face thing comes crashing through the earthen ceiling, making all of the villagers panic because they had never seen anything like it before. Kamina, however, takes the chief’s sword and after a ridiculous outrageous over the top speech, he challenges it head on.

A few seconds later, a girl, Yoko Littner, falls from the opening, firing multiple shots at it before landing. While running around and getting hit on by Kamina, she explains to them that the strange thing was called a Gunmen. They eventually reach the giant face Simon had originally wanted to show Kamina, and it is revealed that it, too, is a Gunmen. It seems to react to a little drill that Simon had hung around his neck (a treasure he had found earlier while tunneling), and although Simon wants Kamina to pilot it, he refuses, saying that Simon is the one who found it and thus deserves it. Thus after some encouragement from Kamina (and coining the ever popular catchphrase, "Believe in me who believes in you!") Simon takes the drill and inserts it into what looks like a keyhole, twisting it. This brings the Gunmen to life.

Long story short, they fly out of the ground into the open, Kamina dubs it "Lagann," and after a bit of a tussle, and much spirit power backed by Kamina, they drill through the larger, invading Gunman and soar out over the planet.

Thus begins the epic saga of Kamina’s and Simon’s journey through the surface world. Although two more Gunmen appear, Yoko’s fellow villagers appear to help them, and the two soon begin to learn more about the world outside of their underground home, including the beastman. They were the original pilots for the Gunmen and were the ones who basically oppress the humans to live underground. Of course, Kamina is not one to just let this stand, so he sets out to fight against the Beastmen and, though difficult, proves successful, and his little troop grows as the series progresses.

After picking up some scraps and helping the Littner villagers carry it back to their base, they come across a skull not too far from their village. They bury it and continue on. Why is this important? Well, you'll see. The following day, the beastmen from before return. In the fight, Kamina is able to steal obtain his own Gunmen, later to be named "Gurren." It’s of course large. And a bit over the top. With a great face. At first he has difficulty controlling it, the mech basically rejecting him. It's not until he's slammed into the previously made grave and see the skeleton that he has a bit of a mental shake up. Despite implying that he would never fall or die up here, death is staring at him in the face. But then after a few seconds, he is able to raise the hand to smash it against the skull, the system clearing him as he stands and is able to pilot it from there on.

Returning to the skeleton to once again bury it, Kamina notices a bracelet on its wrist. Recognizing, he quickly starts to unearth more to reveal a cape. It's the same one worn by his father. Having dreamed of rejoining his father on the surface after proving himself to be a man worthy of it, this is actually quite a blow to him. But rather than stay mourning or let it get him down for too long, he's out partying with the rest of them.

When he and Simon combine via slamming Simon’s Lagann into the Gurren’s head in which the pointy drill is like only a foot or so above Kamina’s head, they form a super, epic, outrageous, ridiculously powerful Gunmen called...Gurren-Lagann. It’s a very creative name, considering this was Kamina.

Gurren-Lagann was formed during a battle with Viral, a strong beastman that had stumbled upon them while they were out hunting and getting supplies. It was also the result of Kamina being brash and stupid. Viral’s Ganmen had a helmet, making it look like it had two faces. So Kamina always called it two-faced. To make things even, and to show Viral that his “two faces” weren’t really all that, he and Simon “combine” as stated above. Needless to say, everyone went “WTF” at that. But it worked. Despite what everyone expected.

From then on, after taking his father's cape and vowing to continue the journey in his place, Kamina, Yoko, Simon, and Leeron separate from Yoko’s village to travel on their own and learn more about the beastmen so they could fight and eventually defeat them. They had discovered that the Gurren had a “return point” tracker, and they were using it similar to a GPS system: they were heading toward wherever the Ganmen had come from, knowing that it would be the beastmen’s base.

Later on, more people learn about their endeavors, and they encounter more people to add to their group. They first meet Kittan and his sisters, Kinon, Kiyal, and Kiyoh, who after helping them fight a group of Ganmen, continue on their own travels and spread the word of what Kamina and his group were doing. They also “acquire” Rossiu, Gimmy, and Darry after accidentally (and literally) falling into their underground village and help defend it against a Ganmen attack.

The group would eventually grow even larger when they finally reach the beastman base: the Dai-Ganzen (also a Ganmen), commanded by one of the four god generals, Thymilph. Kittan had managed to find others who shared their cause and stole their own Ganmen to help with the fight, and so they join with Kamina to create their own army. They are victorious in the battle, with Simon being the one to actually defeat it all by himself as Kamina had left the controls to him, and they make plans to finish it and take complete control of the Dai-Ganzen once and for all. With everyone now on their time, Kamina renames the group the Dai Gurren-dan.

SPOILER ALERT. SPOILER ALERT.

That night, when Yoko tries to warn Kamina to not be as reckless as he had been that day, he reveals how he wanted to create a world where everyone, especially kids like Simon and the rest, could grow up without fear and could see the open sky. He also tells her of how Simon is the one who inspires him. He refers to a time when he and a group were trapped underground after an earthquake, and he had almost given up on finding a way out. But it was at that moment that Simon took his drill and started drilling a way out. Seeing that small back work so hard, it was all he needed to believe again, and that Simon was stronger than him because of it. That's why he always encourages Simon.

Later in the morning, Yoko would find him again to confess her feelings for him. They share a kiss, and Kamina promises her that he would pay it back to her tens times. Unfortunately, this would never happen.

The battle is long and hard, and though they are victorious, it's at a great price. Simon had overheard and saw what happened between Kamina and Yoko, and he had actually had a crush on Yoko. This had affected his emotional and mental state, making him unable to complete his part in taking over the Dai-Ganzen. Seeing his hesitation and getting rightfully pissed off about it, Kamina had launched himself up there and literally knocked some sense into the kid. Nice right hook to the face. It worked, but after returning to the Gurren, he suffered a fatal injury. Thymilph had pierced through the Gurren from below in a surprise attack and had sent him back down again.

Believing him to be dead and that it was his fault, Simon is sent into an extreme unstable and emotional state despair, causing him to take control of the Dai-Ganzen but sending it toward an active volcano. He’s saved when he hears Kamina’s voice again. Yes, though the injury is fatal, he’s not quite dead yet. He manages to pull himself up and finish the job. Despite his state, the two combine to form Gurren-Lagann, and Kamina takes over the controls. He is able to perform one last epic new and advanced attack called the "Giga Drill Breaker" and destroy the remaining beastman army (it involves a lot of drills).

He gives his final words to Simon: "Don't believe in the you who believes in me. Don't believe in the me who believes in you. Believe in the you who believes in yourself." This is a complete reversal of what he normally tells Simon: "Believe in me who believes in you." Kamina is basically telling Simon that he no longer needs to rely on him and that instead the boy has his own courage and self that he can count on. He then he whispers farewell ("See you later.") to everyone else who is hearing through the communicators. He is later found dead in the cockpit with a smile on his lips.

Though I’m taking Kamina right after he dies, it should be noted that Kamina does not stay dead for the series.

His legacy, his words, and spirit continue to push the group and are often rephrased and said in many episodes. He makes cameo appearances through the statue that is put up in Kamina City (obviously named after him), through flashbacks, and also in the final episodes when the group really needs him to help pull them out of a tough challenge. There the crew finds themselves stuck in an alternate dimension in which they are envisioning themselves living an alternate life. It is still debatable if in the episode Kamina is actually spiritually there or just conjured by the dream, but he appears to help pull Simon and Yoko out of the trap. He even has a small conversation with Simon, who tells Kamina that this isn't really their final goodbye—rather he'll always be there in his heart and spirit.

He of course has no knowledge of this. But he will be conscious that he had died.

Personality:
Kamina has a flame like tattoo on his back and it accurately represents what he is: the burning passion that ignites the fire in every man's (and woman's) soul. He is also what many might consider as a the flame that burned the brightest and strongest, but burned out way before its time.

Kamina is overconfident, arrogant, loud, and an idiot. What makes him the idiot that he is isn't so much because of being stupid in the head. It's because of how he acts. Kamina is actually a pretty honest guy. The only emotions he tries to hide are any insecurities he may feel, but otherwise he speaks his mind, saying what he thinks even when he probably shouldn't. If he thinks something is stupid, he'll say so and oppose it. If he thinks a girl is hot, he'll openly comment about it. He can be polite and be more sensitive about things, but it really depends on who he's talking to and whether he thinks they deserve being treated so. But he's not going to hide his opinion be it good or bad. He's not going to try to spin tales, and that includes claiming whatever fault he's done. He might exaggerate or pump something up, but he won't outright lie. And there are the stunts that he pulls that just compounds that "hotblooded idiot" label.

He has some brains, but he is very much "brawn." He goes against every facet of common sense and rationality and he isn't the brightest bulb in the box in terms of intelligence. However, he's not just some brute, either (despite using brute force most of the time). He is able to process things and reason well enough as anyone. He just prefers his own way more. As a man of action and thus being a bit more simpleminded about things, preferring to do things directly, he leaves the hardcore thinking for those who have the mind for it. This does mean that he tends to be reckless about his way of doing things, usually taking the leap before looking. However, his instincts are usually right on the mark, and that includes his reflexes. He might not pre-plan anything, but he is a genius when it comes to adapting and thinking on his feet, improvising with whatever he has on hand. He is also rather perceptive when it comes to reading his environment and his enemy. Against Viral, he even noticed that the same animal they shot was alive and used it as a distraction. He is very quick to notice or figure out weaknesses and using whatever tactics—no matter how unconventionally or arguably cheap—to exploit them. Of course these skills can always be refined, and he becomes a bit less reckless as time goes on. This is especially so when he has to start factoring in how his actions will affect his team. He might still charge in first, but now it's less about himself but how the others will handle it.

He is this way because he is actually very passionate about his goals and beliefs. Once he sets his mind on something, he won't stop, which also makes him quite stubborn and persistent about things. No matter the odds, no matter if it's a one in a billion chance or, hell, a zero, chance, he'll do whatever it takes to succeed—and most of the time do it. He's not infallible and when it's very clear that there's nothing he can do, he'll pull back. But not before throwing everything and the kitchen sink, the pipes, and the wall first. This doesn't make him narrow-minded, however. He might kick up a fuss and argue, but once he sees a valid point of view, he'll alter his plans to include it. He'll even scrap an entire plan if he sees that another one is better. More importantly, he won't claim it for his own—he'll always give credit where its due and further encourage it.

As arrogant and overconfident as he can be, he's not exactly selfish. He can be, but not in where it's important. In fact, a lot of his confidence lies on the fact that he believes in people. People that he trusts in, at least. He will more than once let his life literally be at the hands of those who are close to him, Simon in particular. But his trust and belief in people isn't just for himself—it's for his friends and teammates as well. Just as he is confident, he tries to share that confidence with others. One of his most often quoted catchphrases is "Believe in me who believes in you," which reflects this train of thought. In essence, it's a cycle of trust. So long as someone believes in him, then that person can also believe in him/herself because Kamina is. It's like the transitive property (A=B, B=C, therefore A=C). But this is just making him the middleman. Upon his death, he will tell Simon that he no longer needs such a middleman—that he has the strength to carry on his own. Kamina is only acting as way to help—to give that boost.

This kind of support and dominance makes him a good leader. In fact, he is very much the "leader" type. It's not unusual for him to take charge or debate with other team members about how to handle a situation, especially if they prefer to retreat. He'll have none of it. While his own actions may seem rash, there is usually some kind of reason to them. Sometimes these reasons only make sense to him, and sometimes it's not until the aftermath that others see it as well. Despite how brash his actions are, he also realizes that he needs to keep a cool head. He even tells Simon this. So there's an odd balance between the philosophy of just charging in and doing so while not getting caught up in the moment to still be able to come up with a plan. He will always try to put himself on the frontlines and make sure everyone else is safe. In essence, he's acting as the "tank" or "bait" so that the monsters can focus on him while everyone else does their part. Not only does he know his team that well, he also, as said before, trusts that they will, however it happens. If not, he will pick up the slack (and give them a punch to the face if necessary).

All that impulsiveness means Kamina is pretty much 99.9% positive energy, nd he has plenty of it to spare. He's a fun-loving, party hearty kind of guy, and always willing to give his support or help a friend out of a jam. He will definitely try and drag anyone out to live it up. No wallflowers around this guy. However, although he doesn't show it, there are times where he can be serious. Although he likes being in the crowds, sometimes he needs some time to himself to reflect on things, maybe even think about what's happening and where to go next. It's these moments where you can see that despite that tough, overconfident appearance, he knows he has limits and weaknesses. A time where he's more honest and lets his guard down a bit. It's also the rare time where Kamina actually seems to be more mature and have something like a reasonable head on his shoulders. And part of the reason why this only happens when he's alone is because he knows he's acting like a beacon of light for everyone. That he's the fire, the torch. So long as the others can see it burning brightly, they'll have nothing to fear. He doesn't want them to see him feel or even seem weakened or troubled at any time. And don't be fooled—he has weaknesses and fears of his own. But he doesn't run from them and instead faces them, using it to help propel him forward and tries to get others to do the same.

He hates seeing anyone trying to push anyone down or subvert them. A large part of rebelling authority is due to his own personal desires to be independent and live freely. This also stems from when everyone except Simon kept trying to chain him down underground when he really wanted to break through the surface. If someone says, "No" he'll figure out away around it. But he fully believes that if someone wants to do something, so long as it's not hurting others or unethical, they should go for it. Dream big and live big. A person shouldn't shortchange themselves or hesitate.

A lot of Kamina's personality is mirrored against Simon's, who is a bit more timid and dependent on Kamina, but there's some irony there. Kamina actually thinks Simon is the strongest, not him. That it's actually because of Simon that he is the way he is. It's not only because he had to help push Simon forward—it's because he had seen Simon's courage before, how the kid still saved everyone during an earthquake. He also likely sees his old self back from when he was a kid and had refused his father's offer. He feels fear and cowardice just like anyone else, but he just fights through it. And with Simon, he can see the kid struggling with it but knows he has a lot of potential. So he helps him, and by helping Simon, Kamina is also helping himself. He can only be brave because Simon needs him to be. He can be the tough guy because of Simon. Yes, Kamina can stand on his own. But he can stand stronger because of Simon. And that's why he puts a lot of his faith and trust in him, why they're the best bros and partners. And why Simon will always be the one who can reason with him and the one he'll give the controls to.

One final thing: HE IS LOUD AND HAS A FIERY SPIRIT OF AWESOME.

Abilities:
Other than being a good leader and a charismatic, motivational speaker (though not always intelligent sounding), Kamina’s main abilities come from himself and physical prowess. He is a great fighter, though not necessarily the best. He’s more of a brawler and will do what comes instinctively than actually following a set fighting style. He’s more tenacious than extremely skilled when it comes to hand-to-hand combat and the sword, but he can use it to a degree. And he’s used a pistol before. His first attempt was…amusing. He learned very quickly not to have the barrel pointed at himself and that it’s not like a rock and you don’t pound with it. By this time, he knows how to use it, but it’s not his weapon of choice. Now, this doesn’t mean he knows how to use it well. Just that you point and pull the trigger.

He’s also actually rather quick to think on his feet when it comes to certain situations. He’ll be conscious of his surroundings and will take any advantage he can with it. Though his actions are usually brash, sometimes the results make you wonder if he was actually a genius when it came to planning it out on the spot. There’s never anything complex about his methods; just quick, simple, violent, and effective. It’s also usually rather creative and arguably unorthodox. But if it works, it works, and he won’t think too much into it. This doesn’t mean he’s an excellent strategist. He’s just good when it comes to moving instinctively and trusting in other people and knowing what they can do.

He’s also a pretty good Gunmen pilot, even if he just tends to do whatever comes to mind and everything he does can be believed to be pure dumb luck.

Other:
He's coming in with his sword (nodachi), cape, and sunglasses. No Gurren sadly.

Affection: Heeey ladies~ He's a very healthy teenager, of course he won't mind it :D Until he gets shot at by Yoko. Okay in all seriousness he's pretty much open to anything from females, but after his experience with Leeron he's less inclined for more affectionate things from males. Brohugs, fist bumps, high fives, ALL THOSE MANLY THINGS ARE COOL BETWEEN BROS. But that's where he draws the line. Not saying that CAN'T be done to him but the reaction will be comical hilarious pure gold do it less than receptive.

Fighting: He will take you on. COME AT HIM. HE'S DIED ONCE WHATEVER. Though he might be a bit more careful about it moreso because of Yoko (damn woman holding him back—). At any rate, any type of fighting is fine. He uses his both his fists and his sword, though he isn't exactly "skilled" in either. He just does what needs to be done, all right. DEATH however........... Talk to me about it but it's very likely not for a while.

Misc.: Fair game for anything else! Feel free to hit me up for more specifics.
